When Willpower Doesn't Work, Focus on Triggers
Apr 02, 2022“You” are just 10% of your whole brain! It doesn’t matter how much willpower “you” have, that’s like trying to fight someone who is 9 times as strong as you.
So are you ready to try something other than relaying on willpower over and over again?
Noticing your Triggers. What are you triggers???
One trigger can be certain people.
It doesn’t matter how much willpower you have, if somewhere in the back of your mind (i.e. subconsciousness) says that you should behave X way to this person when this person behaves in Y way, you will most likely behave X way.
If “X” happens to be negative behavior, the best thing you can do to not lose even more control, is by distancing yourself from this trigger.
Again, willpower doesn’t work.
Why?
Because as emotions rise, our willpower decreases!
triggers are things in the environment that increase the probability for you to perform certain actions and/or have certain thoughts and feelings.
Simple version: triggers cause you do to certain things
If willpower doesn’t work, what does?
What does work, like said in the example above, is removing certain triggers. Again, an emphasis on “certain” triggers, because not all triggers are bad.
You are trying to do a project that requires a lot of concentration and focus but you have your phone beside you. It keeps flashing or pinging with messages and it’s causing you to lose focus. Maybe the phone doesn’t trigger you, maybe it’s something else – but the idea is to be aware of your triggers.
What do you do to improve your focus? Remove the trigger.
Ask yourself a few questions,
- What is willpower? control exerted to do something or restrain impulses.
- What are triggers? Can you name some of your own triggers? And what to do about them?
- When does willpower “work” and when not?
