Why I No Longer Recommend Traditional Fish Oil
(And What I Use Instead)
For years, I went back and forth with fish oil supplements. I knew omega-3s were important, but fish oil just never felt right for me.
Sometimes it was the fishy after-burps. Other times it was the growing awareness around the state of our fish populations, contamination concerns, and increasing evidence of microplastics in fish oils. Eventually, I stopped altogether — and waited for a better option.
What I did know was this:
👉 Our bodies cannot make omega-3 fatty acids on their own.
👉 And even more importantly, we don’t just need omega-3s — we need a balance of omegas.
That balance is something traditional fish oil simply doesn’t provide.
The Omega Gap (And Why It Matters)
Did you know that approximately 95% of people aren’t getting enough omega-3s from their diet alone?
And here’s something many people don’t realize:
Not all fats are created equal.
Omega-3 fats are on the front line of defense against inflammation, which is now recognized as a root contributor to nearly every chronic disease.
Research shows that omega-3s can:

Improve mood and reduce risk of depression

Help lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and arterial plaque

Why Omega-3 Alone Isn’t Enough
While omega-3s get most of the attention, they’re only one part of the story.
As I learned more — including from Dr. Tamara Sachs’ blog Why I No Longer Recommend Fish Oil — it became clear that omegas 5, 6, 7, and 9 are just as important for whole-body health.
These additional omegas are found naturally in foods like:

Seeds and berries

Avocados and olive oil
-
Nuts and whole foods
-
Certain plant oils
Let’s take a closer look at what they do:
Omega-5
Found in pomegranate seed oil, omega-5s are among the most powerful antioxidants identified. They help reduce inflammation, support arterial elasticity, and are the only known plant-based source of CLA (conjugated linoleic acid).
Omega-6 (from plant sources)
Plant-based omega-6s (like those found in raspberry seed oil) actually reduce inflammation. They’re deeply nourishing for the skin and have been shown to improve elasticity, smooth fine lines, and support conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
Omega-7
Found in sea buckthorn and avocados, omega-7s support skin, hair, nails, and — importantly — the mucous membranes of the body. This includes the stomach lining, eyes, mouth, and vaginal tissue, making omega-7s especially supportive in midlife.
Omega-9
Present in olive oil and salmon, omega-9s support heart and brain health, help reduce cardiovascular risk, and are associated with improved energy and emotional balance (and honestly, who wouldn’t want that?).
Why I Changed My Recommendation
Once I understood the importance of omega balance, combined with concerns around microplastics and oxidation in fish oil, I knew a simple omega-3 supplement no longer made sense for me — or my clients.
Dr. Sachs now recommends (and I fully agree) a plant-based omega blend sourced directly from the original producers of omegas — not from fish.

The algal oil and sea buckthorn berry oils are processed differently because they aren’t seeds (so they can’t be pressed the same way), but those processes too are at low temperature to ensure that the nutrients remain and no contaminants are added.
