I was reading the book, How Not to Die by Micheal Greger, M.D. and was inspired to share some tips with you about your breasts and prevention. 

 

Specifically Michael Greger is discussing how to avoid getting breast cancer. Unfortunately each year about 230,000 American women are diagnosed and 40,000 die from it. But, there are things you can do NOW.

 

Cancer doesn’t grow over night, it takes years, sometimes decades, to form.

 

“People who are doing the right thing by improving their lifestyles in hopes of preventing cancer may in fact be successfully treating it as well. Don’t wait until you are diagnosed to change your lifestyle, start NOW, it is NEVER too late.”

 

In 2020, I was listening to a Simplicity Sessions podcast with Jenn Pike, listen here, as she interviews Nicole Scott about her journey with a breast scare due to her hair (Your Gorgeous Hair - read here). Both of these ladies are part of the Juice Plus Canada team that I proudly am affiliated with as well. 

 

Exercise:

Darwin said, it’s the survival of the fittest and when it comes to exercise…get fit. Sometimes we get caught up on how much we weigh but it’s deeper than that. Movement offers you a preventative measure against breast cancer (and more) because it tends to lower you circulating estrogen levels. Five hours a week of vigorous exercise can lower estrogen and progesterone exposure by about 20%.

Get Your Greens:

By adding cruciferous (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts, kale, etc.) veggies into your daily diet you can significantly reduce your risk of breast cancer. For example, broccoli boosts the activity of detoxifying enzymes in your liver, therefore if you are eating a steak off the BBQ, having a side of broccoli will reduce your carcinogenic load.

 

Not getting your 13 minimum daily servings of fruits, veggies and berries - here is the simple shift I use daily to bridge the gap.

Flaxseeds:

These are powerful little seeds that are one of the richest sources of omega 3 fatty acids, but even more exciting is their lignan content. Lignans are phytoestrogens that can dampen the effects of the body’s own estrogen. Tossing a tablespoon into your morning smoothie will help to reduce your risk of having breast cancer.  Check out my morning smoothie here!!!

Massage Your Breasts:

In addition to those tips, I have been using the Breast Health Massage Oil from Living Libations for two years.  I absolutely love that I am taking a simple step to keep my breasts healthy.

By simply applying a few drops to my palms and then massaging around and on my breasts I am stimulating the circulation & lymph drainage thereby regenerating the movement of fluids in and to my breasts.

  • Massage inward and upward in a circular motion, slowly covering the entire chest.
  • Use this time to become familiar with how your breasts feel.
